One of a group of eight students in charge of organizing and running a weekly free medical clinic in inner-city Buffalo. Duties included administrative activities, clinical patient interactions, grant writing and day to day operation of medical clinic. 2004 2005

  Student Volunteer - Lighthouse Clinic, Genesee Street, Buffalo, NY (Preceptor: Chester Fox, MD). Assist in providing free medical care to the Buffalo inner-city community. Duties include history taking, physical examinations and creating treatment plans for patients with limited access to medical care. 2003 2007

  Student Volunteer - Heart Smart, AMA, Buffalo, NY. Presentation of an informational seminar to elementary students about heart disease. The seminar included anatomical information, cardiac disease prevention techniques and a short skit. 2003 2004

Positions and Work Experience

  2004-2007 Kaplan Test Preparation, MCAT Preparation Course Instructor, Buffalo NY. Instruct students in the basic aspects of the Medical College Admissions Test. Subject areas covered include verbal reasoning, biology, organic chemistry, general chemistry and physics. Instruct students both during the summer and during the school year.

  2002-2003 Undergraduate Teaching Assistant, Introductory Biology, Cornell University. Tutored students, led small group discussions, taught laboratory sessions and administered oral tests for an introductory biology course.

  Summer 2000 Laboratory Technician, Centrex Clinical Laboratories, New Hartford, NY. Prepared slides for review by cytotechnologists. Preparations included operating filtration machine, staining and cover slipping approximately 100 slides per day.

  2009 to Present Research Fellow, Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, Cincinnati OH (Mentors: Hector Wong M.D. and Basilia Zingareli M.D., Ph.D.). Project: Investigated the inflammatory response after both hemorrhagic and septic shock. Specifically, studied the role of LXRa and MMP-8 in regulating the inflammatory response after shock.

 

Other Experience and Professional Memberships

  2004 Summer Research Fellow, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Buffalo NY (Advisor: Todd Demmy, M.D.). Project: Design and author of protocol for the study of optimal pain management after video assisted thoracic surgery. Duties included preparation of study design, protocol, informed consent forms and data sheets. Protocol was reviewed and approved by Institutional Review Board.

  2002 Summer Research Assistant, Hospital for Special Surgery, New York NY (Advisor: Charles Cornell, M.D.). Project: Evaluation of the pre and post-operative deformations of total knee replacement patients aimed at the development of a new design for knee replacement prostheses. Duties included examining x-rays for over 75 patients, data collection and entry, presentation of written reports and database compilation of over 300 total knee arthroplasty patients.

  2001 Summer Laboratory Assistant, Crop and Soil Sciences Laboratory, Cornell University (Advisor: Timothy Setter, Ph.D.). Project: Analysis of maize samples for presence and amount of absissic acid as an indication of survival success under drought conditions. Work included ion-exchange chromatography and bioassays for over 2,500 samples.
