Summer Undergrad Research Fellowship Application University of Cincinnati | College of Medicine

2012 Summer Applicants

We are sorry you missed an opportunity to apply for a Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program this summer.  Our deadline was February 15 at 11:59pm Eastern Standard Time.

All is not lost, however...

If you are searching for a lab in which to participate in biomedical research at the University of Cincinnati and Cincinnati Children's Hospital, visit www.med.uc.edu and read about our Graduate Program faculty and their research.   Faculty members in our PhD Programs run state of the art laboratories at UC and at Cincinnati Children's Hospital, and they are experts in mentoring research trainees.

After you find researchers whose work interests you, contact them to discuss their research and to see if they would be interested in allowing you to do a project in their lab, either as a volunteer or as a student worker.  You might consider reading some of their recently published work, to be able to ask questions about the research.

You will most likely not find positions like this advertised; these are opportunities you make yourself by showing the Primary Investigator (PI) that you are interested in his or her work and that your goal is to prepare for graduate school and a career in research.  Our faculty will be willing to try to help you if they are able to do so.

Here are a few ways to find investigators at UC and Children's Hospital online:

  1. Search the College of Medicine Graduate Program listing: www.med.research.uc.edu/GraduateEd/GraduatePrograms.aspx
Each Program will have a list of Faculty with contact/biographical information and links to publications.  The exception would be the Biomedical Sciences Flex Option, because students in this program can work with faculty in any graduate program.
  2. Search the College of Medicine Department listing (search Children's under "Pediatrics"): www.med.uc.edu/departments
Each Department will have a link to its Research and/or Personnel.
  3. Search by Faculty member's name: http://ucdirectory.uc.edu
  4. Search by Expertise (keyword search): http://webcentral.uc.edu/eProf/search (you do not have to login)
  5. If all else fails, you can also try Google!

Thank you
