Research and Practice Interests

Burn surgery, frostbite, National Burn Registry, skin substitutes. My main research areas involve burn nutrition, infection and immunology as well as opportunistic infections in burned patients. My current research efforts center around the metabolic effects of sleep deprivation in thermally injured patients. Since completing my General Surgery Residency in 1979, I have been involved in the care of burn patients. I was a staff physician in the Burn Unit at Cook County Hospital from 1979 until 1988 and was also director of the Cook County Hospital Skin Bank from 1982 to 1988. Since that time I have continued my involvement in the care of burned patients and am now the Acting Chief of Staff at the Shriners Burns Hospital in Cincinnati as well as Director of the Burn Special Care Unit at the University Hospital. In addition, I am the Medical Director of US Tissue & Cell (formerly Ohio Valley Tissue and Skin Center) and continue to be involved in the banking of human tissues for transplantation.
